CARLOS MORENO GIVES GENEROUSLY
TO THE PRODIGIOUS FUND

AUBURN, Wash. (July 2, 2009) – Trainer Carlos Moreno has had tremendous success this year with Kruger Park, a 5-year-old Florida-bred that took Emerald Downs by storm with victories in the FSN and Seattle handicaps.

When the gelding is all finished racing, Moreno would like to see that Kruger Park—and all Thoroughbreds—have comfortable and happy retirements. To that end, the 54-year-old conditioner is donating $200 to The Prodigious Fund for every starter from his barn in 2009. To date, he has donated $5,400, a total that is being matched by Emerald Downs.

“I'm doing it because I believe in the industry, and because I believe in all of the volunteers who work so hard to give retired horses a good living,” said Moreno, whose wife, Maria Isabel, owns the horses he trains. “The horses provide so much for all of us, every day. They make a priceless contribution.”

Owners at Emerald Downs have the opportunity to effortlessly make contributions to accredited Thoroughbred rescue, retirement and rehabilitation facilities through a voluntary $1 per start minimum contribution from their horsemen's bookkeeper accounts. All contributions to The Prodigious Fund are dispersed at the end of the meeting to approved organizations, and Emerald Downs will match every dollar raised by contributing owners.

Established in 2008, The Prodigious Fund is named in honor of the former racehorse that finished his career at Emerald Downs in 2007 as a 10-year-old. He raced 52 times, from stakes races to the lower claiming races, and always gave a good effort, the kind of professional racehorse that is the sport's bread and butter.

For the 2009 racing year, Emerald Downs has again designated Second Chance Ranch of Elma, Wash., and Chez Cheveaux of Monroe, Wash. to receive the proceeds. Last year, they received over $17,000 from The Prodigious Fund.
